Let's begin by getting a few things clear.

1. There is nothing fancy about the style of harmonica that I teach on this website.
2. Music is a gift from God to enable us to express our deepest emotions of the spirit to Him.
3. Music is meant to be created, not merely listened to.
4. Music is meant to give glory to the Lord and not to the artist.

You do not have to be a harmonica wizard to do it right. The beauty of the harmonica is its simplicity. The most beautiful tone comes from the harmonica when you play a simple single note melody. With a little practice you can make your instrument "sing" the words to a song. And with a little more practice you can make your instrument express the emotions of those words. You cannot do this if you try to fancy it up with difficult riffs and licks. I have heard harmonica players that were so good that their improvisations actually hindered my ability to even recognize the song. All their efforts to impress me were self defeating.

Music is an exquisite vehicle meant to carry only the most honorable of messages. It should not be cheapened by carrying silly songs. I took my garbage to our local waste disposal site a few weeks ago and parked next to a classic Cadillac. I was shocked to see a lady get out and reach in the back seat for a couple garbage bags of trash. Apparently she had no respect for her vehicle. That is the way it is with many musicians. They can make beautiful music but their music only carries garbage.

To experience the real benefits from music, you must be on the creating end, not the listening end. We have so much recorded and broadcast music around us now that few people actually make the effort to learn to play an instrument. It was not always that way. At one time almost every family had several members who could play some kind of instrument. Now most people have to settle for being listeners, instead of creators. To fully enjoy the benefits of music you must participate by singing, playing or dancing. Music was not intended to be a spectator activity.

Finally, the temptation is going to be there to try to impress your friends with your skill. Keep in mind that the purpose of your music is to give glory to the Lord, not to receive glory for yourself. There is a penetrating description of the Pharisees in the time of Jesus. It says about them "they loved praise from men more than praise from God" (John 12:43). Don't be a glory hound.
